Ian’s Story
Ian was diagnosed with Type One on December 21, 2017. I was completely overwhelmed. I knew “about” diabetes because my cousin had Type One and both my parents were Type Two, but I didn’t know about keeping my child alive. One of my friends told me about T1D Mod Squad. I joined the day Ian was diagnosed and immediately started reading through the FB posts. T1DMS was my very first lifeline, my only place to ask questions and my only place to vent. Any concerns I shared at home caused stress to my family. No one there could answer questions. Most of my extended family was supportive but not very informed. This group is how I knew we would be okay. I can’t even list the ways we have been blessed and helped since Ian was diagnosed, this includes throughout the struggle to afford insulin. We cancelled our Dexcom contract well over a year ago because of finances. Ian needed it but we couldn’t afford it. And then comes T1D Mod Squad. Ana saw a comment I had made and somehow (that somehow was God) it touched her heart. Ian had just received the battery warning in the transmitter he had been given by a very precious friend. Talk about timing! Ana reaches out to me about a Dexcom grant. I was blown away! Ian said, “I can get a G6?!?!?” We had prepared him to not get a G6 for years. Our only real option was battery replacement for the G5 and buying discounted sensors or relying on the generosity of others.! I was unprepared for the level of generosity and blown away. We really are a tribe who pull together to help our own. Receiving a grant for the G6 was so above and beyond anything we could have ever imagined. It is amazing! We started it in the pharmacy parking lot and from day one, it is so much more accurate than the G5 for Ian, the G6 is a miracle for him. Thank you all! Thank you T1D Mod Squad! We are forever thankful for all the support and you have really gone above and beyond this time. We love you all!
